Abstract
Objectives : This study aimed to investigate the moderating effect of religious variables on the relationship between depression and suicidal ideation in the elderly with cognitive impairment.

Methods : We analyzed the data of 579 subjects over 60 years old with mild cognitive impairment and mild dementia of Alzheimer¡¯s disease using Duke Religion Index (DUREL), Suicidal Ideation Scale (SIS), and Short Geriatric Depression Scale of Korean version (SGDS-K). We compared the scores of each scales between the religiously affiliated group and the nonreligiously affiliated group and investigated the moderating effect of religious variables on the influence of depression in suicidal ideation.

Results : Religiously affiliated group showed higher scores of organizational religious activity (ORA), non-organizational religious activity (NORA), intrinsic religiosity (IR) than the religiously non-affiliated group, and no differences in SIS and
SGDS-K. However, IR had the moderating effect on the relationship between depression and suicidal ideation.

Conclusion : IR could have positive effects on reducing suicidal ideation in the condition that they felt depressed, by moderating the negative effects of depression in the elderly with cognitive impairment.
